Do you want to play Backgammon, but are perhaps scared of making a fool of yourself?
Don’t be. Just come along and give it a go. We are always happy to welcome learners. If you would rather watch us at first while you get a feel for the game and what it is all about, that's fine.
Don’t understand the rules? No worries, they are not that complicated and we can teach them to you, gently.
Don’t have a Backgammon board?
No problem, we usually have enough to go round. If you have one though please bring it along.
Scared about losing money?
People who don’t play often ask about this aspect of the game. My own view is that playing Backgammon for nothing negates the whole point of it because the cube becomes irrelevant, and proper use of the cube is where most games are won or lost (but don’t ask me to define proper use, I have been playing for thirty years and I’m still learning – very slowly at that). However, you don’t have to put your house on it. In money games, a stake of even 5p per game will provide the necessary buzz. If you do play for cash, play for stakes that you are comfortable with. Most nights the cost would be about £2, (£1 subs and £1 competition fee).
I have heard it said that Backgammon:
Is like Ludo.
Whoever said this wants shooting and has certainly never played Backgammon. The two are as different as would be the experience of eating moondust or Beluga Caviar.
'takes ten minutes to learn, and a lifetime to get any good at'.
Now that, I would agree with.
